Global response: 104 applications from 45 countries for the Gottfried Böhm Scholarship

Cologne 01.06.2025 - With its second round, the Gottfried Böhm Scholarship is already attracting global attention: a total of 104 architects and urban planners from 45 countries and six continents have submitted applications by the application deadline on 31 May. Candidates from the most diverse cultural, political and geographical contexts -ranging from Australia and Zimbabwe to the USA, from Egypt, Italy and India to Canada and the Ivory Coast - submitted diverse and exciting ideas for the design of urban spaces in Cologne.

'The high number of applications from all over the globe shows how universal the topics of urban development, architecture and sustainable planning have become and how much appeal the name Gottfried Böhm has worldwide,' says Susanne Fabry, Chairwoman of the Association Vereins der Freunde und Förderer der TH Köln e.V.. 'We are very happy about the great international response - it shows that Cologne is an attractive place for creative, visionary urban design.

Since December, postgraduate architects and urban planners have had time to apply for the residency scholarship initiated in 2023. It offers the scholarship holder twelve months to develop their own urban planning project for Cologne and the region - with financial backing, creative freedom, professional support and a workspace in the heart of the city. In a multi-stage process, the jury will decide who will be awarded the next Gottfried Böhm Scholarship. The scholarship is scheduled to start in October 2025. “We are looking forward to an exciting selection process and interesting projects by the scholarship holders, with new impulses for the future of our city,” says Paul Böhm, architect and member of the jury.
